Moore's U.S. Marines "Soldiers of the Sea" has a fine old fashioned look. It was issued before World War I and crams in as much information about Marine life as possible. Moore portays Gyrenes, led by a corporal, charging the  enemy in the sunny tropics. Photos of everyday Marine life flank the central illustration. Intermittent Marine interventions in unstable Caribbean islands - the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua and Cuba - were justified by the need to protect the sealanes leading to the strategic Panama Canal. The Marines were sent to the so-called banana republics to quell uprisings when sending the army would have been too big a political statement. 40x30 near mint, conservation backed.
