Smith Little Beaver at the Battle of Cape St. George. ca.1990. Subtitle explains that Captain Arleigh Burke's Des Ron 23 defeated a Japanese force in the early morning hours of November 25, 1943. Off the Solomons, five destroyers in Burke's Little Beavers squadron met five enemy ships in the nighttime Battle of Cape St. George and and sank three of them in what the Naval War College called an "almost perfect action." The formation's slowest ship squeezed out an extra knot by tinkering with a jammed boiler tube earning Captain Burke the nickname "31 Knot Burke." All told he fought 22 battles against the Japanese in just four months. This is a rare and valuable poster signed by the artist and Captain Arleigh Burke himself. # 384 out of a small print run of only 750. 15x22 mint.
